DStv Explora Price and Cost: Tips for First-Timers

17 Oct 20268 min read

Buying your first Explora feels simple until you notice the shelf price is only part of it. The DStv Explora price covers the box, but a first-time buyer also needs the right dish parts, a proper install and a package to watch. Here's what we tell new clients in St Helena Bay before they spend anything.

Quick answer: At the time of writing, the DStv Explora price on DStv's 2026 promotion was from around R1,499. First-timers should also budget for a Smart LNB, roughly R399 to R499, installation of roughly R1,500 to R2,400, and the R125 monthly Access Fee. Ask our team for a current quote for your home.

What you're buying with an Explora

The Explora is a PVR decoder. It records shows, pauses live TV and lets you watch one channel while recording another.

To do that it uses several tuners, which is why it needs a Smart LNB on the dish instead of a basic one. If you're coming from a single-view HD decoder, that's the first new cost to plan for.

There's also the Explora Ultra, the newer model. It adds 4K and HDR, built-in WiFi, streaming apps and room for up to about 110 hours of recordings. If you're still deciding between models, our guide on choosing a DStv decoder lays out the options.

A first-timer's DStv Explora price list

Here's every line a new Explora owner usually pays for. The figures are from DStv's promotions and our own installation ranges, so treat them as a guide at the time of writing.

The once-off total for the box and install often lands well above the sticker. Planning for it upfront avoids a nasty surprise on the day.

Seven buying tips before you pay the DStv Explora price

  1. Compare on the same day. Shops run their own specials and prices change weekly, so a price from last month means little.
  2. Read the box label. Make sure it says Explora and isn't a single-view HD decoder in similar packaging.
  3. Keep the slip. You'll need it for any warranty claim.
  4. Ask what's in the box. A shop decoder usually excludes the dish, Smart LNB, cable and fitting.
  5. Check your TV. No 4K means the standard Explora is enough, and you save the Ultra's extra cost.
  6. Think about a second TV now. XtraView is simpler to plan with the first install than as a later add-on.
  7. Get the fitting quoted first. A written quote tells you the true explora decoder price once it's working.

West Coast conditions that change your dstv explora cost

Where your house stands affects the install far more than the box you pick. The bay brings a few challenges of its own.

Wind and salt on the dish

Strong wind off the sea can nudge a poorly fixed dish out of line, and salt air corrodes connectors and LNBs. We use a solid bracket and seal every connector. Our article on salt air and satellite dishes explains why it matters.

Estates like Shelley Point

Security and golf estates often have rules about where a dish may go and who may work on site. Check with the estate office first, so the install isn't held up at the gate.

Distances between the settlements

Homes in Britannia Bay, Stompneusbaai and Laingville are spread out, and travel is part of any quote. We tell you the full price before we drive out, with nothing added at the door.

Holiday homes that stand empty

If you only visit in season, buy the box well before the holidays. That gives time to fit it, set it up and fix anything before family arrives.

Safety first: Please don't climb onto the roof to check or swap the LNB yourself. Wind on the West Coast makes ladders and roofs dangerous. Leave dish work to a technician with the right gear.

Picking a package to go with it

The box is a once-off cost. The package is what you pay every month, so choose it with care.

  • Starter, R150 per month. 85+ channels, the budget choice that replaced Access.
  • Select, R339 per month. 100+ channels, the family mix that replaced Family.
  • Sports, R479 per month. 115+ channels with every Premier League and PSL match.
  • Movies & Series, R500 per month. Select plus M-Net, kykNET and more.
  • Premium, R979 per month. 130+ channels, including Springbok rugby and F1.

These are the prices at the time of writing, from DStv's September 2026 line-up. Add the Access Fee on top, and check dstv.com or the MyDStv app for the latest figures.

Mistakes that make the DStv Explora price feel higher

A good buy can turn sour after the fact. These are the slip-ups we fix most often for first-time buyers.

  • Buying the box before checking whether the dish needs a Smart LNB.
  • Reusing old, cracked cable that can't carry a strong enough signal.
  • Leaving the dish where a new building or tree blocks its view.
  • Forgetting the Access Fee when working out the monthly budget.

Once it's fitted, it still needs activating. Our guide on how to activate a DStv decoder walks you through that part.

Technician tip: Send us a photo of your dish and the cable at the back of the TV before you buy. We can often tell from that alone whether the parts can stay or need replacing.

DStv Explora price: FAQs

What is the DStv Explora price for a first-time buyer?

At the time of writing, DStv's 2026 promotion had the Explora from around R1,499. A first-time buyer usually also needs a Smart LNB and installation, and our Explora installs usually budget roughly R1,500 to R2,400. Ask our team for a current quote for your home.

Where can I buy a DStv Explora?

You can buy one from DStv directly or from retailers such as Pep, Game, Makro, Checkers and Incredible. Prices differ by store and week, so compare on the day. You can also ask an installer to quote the box supplied and fitted.

Does the DStv Explora price include installation?

A shop price usually covers only the decoder, remote and basic leads. The dish, Smart LNB, cabling and fitting are normally extra. Some DStv offers have bundled installation with other decoders, so read the details of any deal before you compare.

Do you install Explora decoders in St Helena Bay and Shelley Point?

Yes, we fit Explora and Explora Ultra decoders across St Helena Bay, Shelley Point and the nearby bay towns. We quote first, including travel, and work within estate rules. We test the signal with you before we leave.

Is the DStv Explora price per month higher than a normal decoder?

The box has no monthly charge of its own, but because the Explora is a PVR it carries the R125 per month Access Fee at the time of writing. A single-view HD decoder doesn't pay that fee. Your package price stays the same on either box.

Can I use my old DStv dish with a new Explora?

Often the dish itself is fine, but it usually needs a Smart LNB because the Explora has several tuners. Old cable may also need replacing if salt or sun has damaged it. We check everything and include it in the quote.
