OpenView Decoder Kit Price 2026: Retail vs Installer

15 Oct 20268 min read

Should you pick up an OpenView kit off a shop shelf, or let an installer supply and fit it? It's a fair question in St Helena Bay, where the nearest big store can be a fair drive away. Here's how the OpenView decoder price compares both ways, and what each route really gives you for the money.

Quick answer: At the time of writing, the retail OpenView decoder price is R799 online, with store specials from around R599. A decoder with dish and installation voucher is about R1,699. An installer costs more than a bare box but includes fitting, alignment and testing, which on the windy West Coast often works out cheaper overall. Ask our team for a current quote.

OpenView decoder price: retail box vs installer kit

There are really three ways to buy:

  1. A decoder on its own, from openview.co.za or a store
  2. A retail bundle with a dish and an installation voucher
  3. A local installer who supplies or fits the kit and quotes per house

The first is the lowest upfront. The third costs more on the day but covers the bits people forget, like brackets, cable and a proper alignment. Still weighing up free TV against a subscription? Our page on OpenView vs DStv costs sets out the monthly side.

What you get when you buy retail

A store box gets you the decoder. Depending on the deal, you may also get a dish and LNB in a separate carton. You still need cable, a bracket, tools and someone to point the dish.

Retail suits homes that already have a working dish. Many houses in Shelley Point and Britannia Bay had DStv at some stage. OpenView uses the same satellite position, so that dish can often take the new box with only a quick check of the LNB and cable.

The OpenView decoder with installation price

The middle option is the retail bundle. At the time of writing, a decoder with a dish and installation voucher comes to around R1,699. Read the voucher terms carefully, because they decide who fits it, when, and what counts as a standard job on your property.

Costs the shelf price leaves out

The ticket on the shelf is never the whole OpenView price. If you go fully DIY, you'll still need:

  • Enough coax cable to reach from the roof to the TV
  • F-connectors and something to seal them against damp
  • A wall bracket and fixings that suit your walls
  • A way to align the dish accurately, which a phone app can't do on its own

Add a second trip to town for a forgotten part, and the gap between DIY and a proper OpenView installation shrinks fast. That's worth weighing when the shop is in Vredenburg and you live out on the bay.

What an installer quote covers

When you book our OpenView HD installation, the quote usually includes:

  • A dish of about 80 to 85cm, LNB and bracket, or a check of the ones you have
  • Coax cable, connectors and weatherproofing
  • Alignment on a signal meter
  • Decoder setup, a channel scan and a test with you
  • Neat, clipped cable runs

We quote first, so you know the total before we load the bakkie and head out.

The West Coast factor

St Helena Bay is spread out, and wind off the Atlantic hits hard. A dish fitted in a hurry can twist out of line after one blustery week. Salt air also eats at cheap bolts and connectors, which is why we seal every join. There's more on salt air on a dish in our earlier post.

Distance matters too. Being local to Stompneusbaai, Laingville and Vredenburg helps us keep travel short and book you in sooner. Here are the areas we cover on the West Coast.

Fishing cottages near the harbour in St Helena Bay often have low roofs facing the sea, so the dish ends up on a side wall or a short pole. That choice changes the bracket and cable needed, which is exactly what a shelf price can't predict.

Safety first: Please don't go up a ladder in the wind to fit or turn a dish. Gusts on the bay catch a dish like a sail. If an old dish has worked loose, take a photo from the ground and send it to us.

When the retail OpenView decoder price makes sense

Buy the box retail if:

  • You already have a solid dish that's still aligned
  • You only want OpenView on one TV
  • You're happy to activate it and scan the channels yourself

Activation is free and done online at openview.co.za, via WhatsApp or in the OpenView app, using the decoder's details. If channels go missing later, our guide to adding channels on OpenView walks you through a rescan.

When the installer route saves you money

Go the installer route if there's no dish, the old one is rusted, or you want TV in more than one room. Each extra TV needs its own decoder and a cable from the dish, and that's easier to plan in one visit.

It also makes sense for holiday homes. One visit before the season and the TV works when the family arrives in December. See our tips on getting a holiday home TV-ready.

A dish aligned properly the first time rides out rain fade better, so you're less likely to pay for a dish alignment service later. Out in Paternoster and the estates, where homes stand empty for weeks, that matters even more.

Technician tip: Keep the box, the receipt and the decoder's details together in a drawer. You need the decoder details to activate, and the receipt if the box ever has to go back to the shop.

OpenView decoder price: FAQs

Is the OpenView decoder price cheaper in store or online?

It changes week to week. At the time of writing, the decoder is R799 on openview.co.za, and stores sometimes run specials from around R599. Compare on the day, and check whether the store price includes a dish or only the decoder.

What does the OpenView decoder with installation price include?

A retail bundle at around R1,699 at the time of writing usually covers the decoder, a dish and an installation voucher. The voucher terms decide what counts as a standard job. Long cable runs, extra TVs and special brackets are often extra.

Do I need an installer for OpenView in St Helena Bay?

Not if you already have a working, aligned dish. Then you can connect the decoder and activate it yourself. If you need a new dish, or the old one has rusted in the salt air, a technician with a signal meter will get it right.

Where can I buy an OpenView decoder?

You can buy one online at openview.co.za, from large chain stores, or through a local installer who supplies and fits the kit. Wherever you buy, keep the receipt and make sure it's the current WiFi-enabled model.

Will salt air damage my OpenView dish?

Over time, yes, if the parts and joins aren't protected. Salt spray corrodes bolts, brackets and connectors, which weakens the signal. Sealed connectors and a sturdy bracket help a lot, and a yearly look from the ground catches problems early.
